By the time we got married in 2000, Don had already rehabbed two houses (top to bottom, side to side), and Lisa had at least lived in several old houses. Since then, we’ve gutted or built from scratch seven bathrooms and two kitchens. Lisa and daughter moved to NW Arkansas in fall 2006, leaving Don to finish the Ashland house. He joined us in the spring, and we all lived with my parents until fall 2007. We were hoping to sell our third house before school starts, and buy yet another house that has been benignly neglected, but the market conspired against us. Insead, we sold our Chicago suburb Italianate the day after school started. We moved to an apartment in town just before school started, and bought a house in December 2007. A five-flat that we’re hoping to have on the local school housewalk by Spring 2013. The clock is ticking …
